Alexandre Penet Grand Cru Brut Nature MV
80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. In 2011, Penet decided to create a négociant label to complement the estate portfolio: he wanted to grow his business and sell more wine, but he didn't want to give up estate-bottling the Penet-Chardonnet range. His idea is to make wines in a similar style to Penet-Chardonnet, "not necessarily of lower quality, but more accessible," he says. Like the wines of Penet-Chardonnet, these are ripe, full-flavored champagnes, released with low dosages, or no dosage, but having plenty of depth and character to compensate. No wonder why the great champagne critic, Peter Liem, said Alexandre Penet is a name to watch out for. The Grand Cru Brut Nature, from Verzy and Verzenay, contains 60 percent of reserve wine from a perpetual reserve and is partly fermented in barriques. It’s ample in body and rich in texture, surprisingly so for a brut nature, and its flavors are bold and waxy. What a wine! Treat yourself to this wine with a special meal and be on the lookout for Alexandre Penet's wines as these will become highly allocated, hard-to-find wines very, very soon.
