Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino 2016

Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino 2016

100% Sangiovese. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and now owned by his son Pier Luigi Ripaccioli and helmed by grandson Francesco Ripaccioli, Canalicchio di Sopra mirrors the history of Montalcino itself as its Brunello production moved the region from poverty to prosperity. Situated in the northern Brunello zone, Canalicchio's 37 acres lie at some of the highest altitudes in Montalcino, receiving limited exposure to the influence of the Mediterranean Sea, and this location allows the estate to craft outstanding wines in challenging years because sheltered by Monte Amiata and kissed by the sea, Canalicchio's special microclimates can spare its vineyards from excessive heat or rain, protect them from hail, and generally help the estate's grapes to ripen evenly when other producers are left high and dry. Guided by the past and influenced by the present, Canalicchio's winemaking protocol picks the best of modern and traditional methods to craft an authentic Brunello that speaks of its vineyards' high altitude and north Montalcino terroir, and the resulting wines possess rich cherry fruit layered with notes of smoke, minerals, and earth--as well as those telltale Montalcino aromatics. Best of all, Canalicchio’s releases generally offer the Holy Grail of Brunello, a wine that's both drinkable now and capable of developing over time in the cellar. We love our high-altitude Brunello's and we think this would be perfect on your dinner table tonight.

Tasting Notes
"The 2016 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino is flat-out stunning, remarkably vibrant and an almost-ethereal expression. There’s an exotic citrusy tinge to its ripe black cherries, taking on hints of sage, cedar and allspice, all grounded by moist earth tones. It’s focused and remarkably pure with a noticeable inner sweetness to the red and hints of blackberry fruit, all cast across a silky, feminine frame. The structure builds like a crescendo, as minerals fade to youthful tannins. Juicy acids maintain perfect balance from start to finish, making for a surprisingly fresh expression yet with amazing length. There’s simply so much going on here, and there are promises of more good things to come." - Eric Guido
