Grande Colline Vin de France (Saint Joseph) 2015
100% Syrah. Grande Colline was started by Hirotake Ooka, a Japanese scientist, who decided to go to oenology school in Bordeaux and then worked with Jean-Louis Grippat & Thierry Allemand in the Rhone. Two freaking legends! His first vintage was 2001 and everything from the start has been very natural, very biodynamic. Even foregoing the use of sulfur. Unfortunately, he had to return to Japan to take care of family so this St. Joseph bottling is one of his last wines. Even though it comes from a well-known appellation, Ooka declassifies it to Vin de France, so he is not bound by any rules. These are magical, cult wines that we will never see again and will go in a hurry. I recommend a hour or two in a decanter and then watch this wine slowly develop over time in the glass.
