Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Cuvee Les Motelles 2016
100% Cabernet Franc. There are many who make wines from their head, and less that make it from their heart. Romain Guiberteau is both, but the heart is his ultimate guide. Electricity and high-frequency is the game here and you’d better be ready to get your socks blasted off when you pull the cork on one of his wines. Romain comes from a very special hill, named Brézé, which has dense, shallow limestone bedrock that has throughout time yielded superb wine. From vines planted in 1955, the soils in Les Motelles are clay-rich with gravel, it's Guiberteau's only site with minimal limestone. Full of depth and character with silky tannins, the wine is layered with all kinds of fresh plum, grenadine and subtle earth notes ending in a long, savory finish. The electric and compacted wines of Guiberteau have exemplified the energy of this region. The recent rediscovery of this area has stirred up the scene and is nearly rewriting the expectation for the heights that Chenin and Cabernet Franc can achieve and it shows, as Guiberteau's wines are highly allocated and in the best restaurants in France.
