Koppitsch 'Ret' Red 2018
80% Zweigelt, 20% St. Laurent. Alexander and Maria Koppitsch began making wine in Austria in 2011. They took over their parents' 5.5-hectare winery and moved from selling their grapes into making their own wine. The vineyards in Burgenland, one of the great wine-growing regions of Austria, at the shores of the Neusidl Lake and on the eastern end of the Leitha Mountains which feature soft, rolling hills of mostly limestone soil. Like his father and grandfather before him, Alex does not believe in introducing any additives into the grapes or the wine and is fully biodynamic. The Rét from Koppitsch translates to “field” in Hungarian – referring to the land that was used for feeding the livestock of the village, while the wine is also a field blend of two grapes. It is refreshing, full of wild berry fruit, and a bit woodsy. This is a beautiful unfiltered cuvée that is super easy to drink any time of day. The wines of Alexander and Maria are on the cusp of exploding while their wines only continue to get better.
