Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes 2017

Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes 2017

90% Listán Negro, 10% Castellana Negra. The Canary Islands, located off the coast of Morocco, but technically a part of Spain, form a backdrop for some of the most unlikely yet wondrous vineyards for producing fine wines in the entire world. On the island of Tenerife are the extraordinary vineyards of Suertes del Marques. Visiting the vineyards of Suertes del Marques is like going back in time. The area is Phylloxera free and so the vines are pie franco (own rooted), are farmed organically, and extremely old, with some potentially over 200 years! Given the extremely special nature of what Suertes del Marques possesses, proprietor Jonatan Garcia Lima endeavors to make fresh, tensile and mineral driven wines that showcase the volcanic soils and the native varieties. He does this through minimal intervention, neutral barrels, and low amounts of added sulphur. 7 Fuentes is a blend of vineyards and is a perfect introduction to their lineup of wines. This is a special winery that you should not miss.

Tasting Notes
"The entry-level red is the 2017 7 Fuentes, a Listán Negro blend with some 10% Castellana Negra sourced from up to 25 vineyards from the La Orotava village. This represents a high percentage of their production with 67,000 bottles, which is more than half of their annual output. There were multiple fermentations, some in concrete, some in stainless steel, with around 10% full clusters and always with indigenous yeasts. Seventy percent of the volume was kept in concrete while the remaining 30% matured in used 500-liter oak barrels for nine months. This is a good barometer for the style, character and quality of the vintage, and it shows a little mellower and more approachable than the 2016. It's a little juicier within the pumice and black pepper style that always defines this wine." - Luis Gutierrez
